What is this?-Photo Hunt Saturday

Do you know what these are? Every neighborhood had them at one time. These are glass insulators. Glass insulators were first produced in the 1850's for use with telegraph lines. As technology developed insulators were needed for telephone lines, electric power lines, and other applications. The insulator was placed at the top of the pole and the wire wrapped around the indented part on the insulator.

I knew exactly what they were. When I was a young men, I once climbed a pole on a old line that was falling down and got a few insulators. I don't remember what happened to them, but I remember that I ruined a shirt doing it.

I had a few of those at one time. I know there are two of the heavier brown ceramic type in two of the bedrooms used as door stops. Is that your personal collection? Great for this week's Theme!

I haven't seen any of these for more years than I care to remember! I'd no idea they came in different colours like this.

I knew what they were right away. The benefits of having grandparents who owned a farm and kept everything, I guess.

Hehe... I didn't know them at all if not for the FYI after your photo! I initially thought they were ornate thimbles, just goes to show how much I know hehe

Who knew glass insulators could be kind of pretty looking! That's the cool thing about this photo hunt. I'm always learning something new!

Cool idea for the theme. I had some and found some interesting little wire supports that hold them upside down. (Ya gotta love flea markets, lol.) They make neat little holders for small candles. Colorful and heavy.

Oh - I almost forgot.

Thanks for the visit and the kind comments.

Here in Illinois , in The spring time when farmers plow the fields, we will see these come up along fenclines of the fields , where poles holding them once stood...and in some places...still there. always fun to find..

I learned what they were a few years ago when selling on eBay. They can bring decent money. Thanks for stopping by my blog today! It is nice to meet all my visitors!
